Description:

This article describes the procedure for replacing a switch (e.g. due to a hardware defect) in a stack of XS-series switches.


Requirements:

If a member of the stack is exchanged, the network connected to the stack will be down while work continues. If all of the network participants require high availability, the entire cabling must be designed for redundancy.



1) Preparations:

1.1) Save the running config of the stack master/manager as the start config:

If you have not already done so, the configuration of the stack master/manager must be saved as the start configuration (if the switch can still be reached via the web interface or the command line).

1.1.1) Click on Save Configuration in the top right-hand corner to save the configuration as the start configuration.

The start configuration is retained even if the device is restarted or there is a power failure.

1.1.2) Confirm your changes by clicking OK.


1.2) Save the switch configuration of the stack master/manager:

Save the startup configuration using either the web interface or SCP. 


1.3) Match the firmware of the replacement device to the firmware of the stack members:

We recommend that you match the firmware of the replacement device to the firmware used in the stack in advance. This cuts the time taken for its inclusion in the stack, which of course reduces the downtime.


1.4) Determine the board type used for the stack (XS-6128QF only):

If the device being replaced is still a member of the stack, connect to the web interface of the stack master/manager, go to the menu System → Summary → Board Type, select the device being replaced under Unit and check which board type is configured

If the device being replaced is not a member of the stack and the board type is unknown, you need to read-out the board type from a backup of the running configuration. In this case please contact LANCOM Support.

Alternatively, you can display the board type used using the console command show board-type all



2) Procedure for exchanging the device:

2.1) Configure the board type (XS-6128QF only):

Connect to the web interface of the replacement device, switch to the menu System → Summary → Board Type and configure the board type that was set up on the original switch (see step 1.4).

As an alternative, you can use the command line to configure the board type. To do this, enter the following commands:

configure → board-type <used Board Type>


2.2) Configure the stack ports on the replacement device:

Connect to the web interface of the replacement device, switch to the menu Stacking → Base → Port Configuration and configure the stack ports in the same way as the original switch.

As an alternative, you can use the command line to configure the stack ports. To do this, enter following commands: 

configure → stack → stack-port <switch port> stack


2.3) Save the running configuration of the replacement device as the start config:

The configuration of the replacement device must be saved as a start configuration.

2.3.1) Click on Save Configuration in the top right-hand corner to save the configuration as the start configuration.

The start configuration is retained even if the device is restarted or there is a power failure.

2.3.2) Confirm your changes by clicking OK.


2.4) Exchanging the switch:

2.4.1) Disconnect the device being replaced from the power supply. If the stack master/manager was exchanged, one of the stack members takes on the role of master/manager.

2.4.2) Disconnect the replacement device from the power supply. Some settings are only accepted correctly after a cold start. 

2.4.3) Replace the old switch with the new device and reconnect the network cables. 

2.4.4) Reconnect the power cable to the replacement device. This is then automatically added to the stack and configured. 

If the firmware of the replacement device was not adjusted to the firmware used in the stack in advance (see step 1.3), this process is carried out now. This can take several minutes. During this time, the new switch is shown in the menu Stacking → Base → Summary with status as the value Updating Code.



3) Final steps: Checking the stack status

Connect to the web interface and navigate to the menu Stacking → Base → Summary.

Check that each device is displayed with the status OK and is functioning correctly.
