Description:
The error message Automatic media detection – Could not find suitable media to establish a connection with is a rather generic error message. Generally speaking, the VPN gateway is unreachable or the VPN proposals do not match.
In order for the precise error message to be displayed, up to and including Advanced VPN Client Version 3.13 RU2 the connection medium needs to be permanently set in the relevant VPN profile on the tab Basic Settings. The error message is then displayed in the main window of the Advanced VPN Client instead of the message Automatic media detection – Could not find suitable media to establish a connection with.
From version 4.10 of the Advanced VPN Client, the exact cause of the error is displayed in the window Communication media. In this case, the Advanced VPN Client has no response from the VPN gateway.
This article describes the necessary steps for error analysis and resolution.

Requirements:
  • Advanced VPN Client
  • LANCOM router as the VPN gateway
  • ICMP requests (ping) must be answered by the VPN gateway

Procedure:
1) Ping the LANCOM router to see if it can be reached:
From the computer or laptop with the Advanced VPN Client, use the command line to ping the public IP address or DNS name of the LANCOM router.
If using a DNS name, check that the resolved IP address matches the actual public IP address of the router.
This Knowledge Base article describes how to read out a dynamic WAN IP address.
  • If the ping is answered, basic communication is working.
  • If the ping to the DNS name is answered but the IP address does not match the actual IP address of the router, there is a problem with the DynDNS update. In this case, save the current public IP address of the router in the Advanced VPN Client profile as a test.
  • If the ping is not answered there is a basic problem with the communication. In this case, check if the router is switched on and that the Internet connection is working.

2) Creating traces on the VPN gateway:
If the VPN connection cannot be established even though the router can be reached via ping, further analysis requires the creation of traces. Use the attached trace configuration to do this:
Creating traces with the trace module (LANtracer) is described in this Knowledge Base article.

Start the trace and then initiate the establishment of the VPN connection in the Advanced VPN Client.

3) Sending the information to LANCOM Support:
If the behaviour cannot be isolated by carrying out the previous steps, please contact LANCOM Support.
