Description:
This document describes how to configure link monitoring (sometimes called line polling) for IPoE-based Internet connections.

As of LCOS version 8.80, link monitoring can be setup directly when configuring an IPoE-based Internet connection in the Setup Wizard. With LCOS versions before version 8.80, link monitoring must be set up manually in the configuration.

Requirements:

Procedure:
1) Configuring link monitoring in the Setup Wizard (as of LCOS 8.80):
1.1) In LANconfig, start the Setup Wizard for setting up Internet access.
1.2) Follow the wizard's instructions until the dialog where you can configure link monitoring for the Internet connection.
    • With the option Link monitoring by pinging the DNS server, pings are sent to the public IP address of the DNS server as specified in the connection parameters of the IPoE connection (i.e. ICMP packets are sent periodically).
    • With the option Link monitoring by pinging own IP addresses, a subsequent dialog allows you to specify up to four public IP addresses, which can be pinged for line monitoring.
1.3) If the option Link monitoring by pinging own IP addresses is selected, you then have to specifiy at least one public IP address, which can be pinged for line monitoring.
1.4) Complete the Setup Wizard and write the configuration back to the LANCOM router. As soon as the Internet connection is established, line monitoring activates automatically.

2) Manual configuration of line monitoring (LCOS versions older than 8.80):
2.1) Open you the LANCOM router's configuration dialog and go to the menu Communication → Remote sites → Polling table.
2.2) Click the Add button.
  • In the field Remote site, enter the Internet connection, for which the line monitoring should be performed.
  • In the fields IP address x you need to specify at least one public IP address, which should be pinged for line monitoring.
  • If you fill in the fields Ping interval and Retries with the value 0 (default), an interval of 20 seconds for 5 retries is taken. This default setting is sufficient for most applications.

2.3) Confirm your entries with OK and write the configuration back to the LANCOM router. Line monitoring is activated immediately.
