Description:
This document uses a configuration example to describe how you can use a LANCOM router with two SIM slots to redundantly operate an existing primary (V)DSL connection along with two additional UMTS or LTE connections (dual SIM).

Requirements:

Scenario:
  • For an existing primary (V)DSL Internet connection (INTERNET), a connection failure should initiate a changeover to UMTS/LTE Internet connection 1.
  • Once the maximum data volume for UMTS/LTE-Internet connection 1 has been reached and the primary (V)DSL Internet access is still not available, a changeover should be initiated to UMTS/LTE Internet connection 2.
  • Once the maximum data volume of UMTS/LTE Internet connection 2 is reached, a changeover should be initiated to the primary (V)DSL Internet connection.

Procedure:

1) Configuring the first cellular connection in LANconfig:

1.1) Launch the Setup Wizard in LANconfig and select the option Set up Internet access.
1.2) In this example configuration, a new connection for IPv4 is to be created.
1.3) Select the Mobile interface of the LANCOM router.
1.4) Set your country as appropriate.
1.5) The first cellular connection is via Deutsche Telekom.
1.6) The SIM card for the first cellular connection is plugged into the SIM 1 slot for this example.
1.7) Do not accept the default settings for the connection name but do enter a unique name for the mobile connection (in this case: T-MOBILE).
1.8) Enter the PIN of your SIM card. Use the default setting for the APN.
1.9) Since the previously configured primary (V)DSL connection (INTERNET) should continue to be used, you select the option Leave the current default route in this dialog.
1.10) Click on Finish to close the Setup Wizard and write the configuration back to the LANCOM router.

2) Configuring the second cellular connection in LANconfig:

2.1) The second cellular connection is set up with the Setup Wizard in the same way as the first cellular connection. The SIM card for the second connection is inserted into the SIM 2 slot.
2.2) Do not accept the default settings for the connection name but do enter a unique name for the mobile connection (in this case: VODAFONE).
2.3) Since the previously configured primary (V)DSL connection (INTERNET) should continue to be used, you select the option Leave the current default route in this dialog.
2.4) Click on Finish to close the Setup Wizard and write the configuration back to the LANCOM router.

3) Configuring the connection redundancy

3.1) Configure the backup feature:

One way to configure a backup scenario is to use administrative distances. Information can be found in the article Backup scenarios based on “Administrative distance .

3.1.1) Open the configuration of the LANCOM router in LANconfig and switch to the menu item Communication → Backup → Backup table.

3.1.2) Set the Remote site to the (V)DSL connection INTERNET.

3.1.3) Edit the Backup table and add the cellular connections T-MOBILE and VODAFONE.

3.1.4) Click OK to accept the configuration.

3.2) Configure volume budgets for cellular connections:

3.2.1) Open the configuration of the LANCOM router in LANconfig and switch to the menu item Management → Budget → Volume Budgets.

3.2.2) Edit the entries for the cellular connections T-MOBILE and VODAFONE.

In this example, each cellular connection is disconnected once a 1GB data volume has been consumed.

Important: Enable the “Disconnect” option so that the next backup connection can be activated.
